Metallica To Perform At Los Premios MTV Latin America 2008
October 16 awards show in Mexico marks band's first North American TV appearance of the year.

In the weeks leading up to the release of their latest LP, Death Magnetic, Metallica did very little in the way of actual promotion for the effort. They didn't make the late-night TV rounds or appear on any talk shows. The album's September 12 release date came and went with very little fanfare — and the record still went on to scan close to 500,000 units in just three days, earning Metallica their fifth-consecutive chart-topping debut.

Four weeks later, the album has passed the million-sold mark and will be at #5 on the Billboard albums chart next week. And even though they're not hurting for publicity, Metallica will make their first North American live television performance of the year (they have appeared on TV in the U.K.). On October 16, the band will take the stage when the annual Los Premios MTV Latino America 2008 take over Guadalajara, Mexico. The awards, which will be held inside the Auditorio Telmex, will air live at 9 p.m. ET, only on MTV Tr3s. Metallica will be performing the first single from Death Magnetic, "The Day That Never Comes."

"Metallica is the biggest hard rock band in the world — period," said Jose Tillan, senior vice president of content and music for MTV/VH1 Latin America. "We are honored to have them play at Premios this year. If you have never seen Metallica play, you are in for a heart-stopping experience. My ears are still ringing from the last time I saw them live a couple of years ago!" Others acts to appear at this year's awards include performers Tokio Hotel, Paramore, Katy Perry, the Kooks, Moderatto, Calle 13, Café Tacuba, Julieta Venegas and others; presenters include Gene Simmons, Flavor Flav, Tila Tequila and 30 Seconds to Mars.

And if catching Metallica's sole television performance of 2008 isn't enough to get you to tune in, consider the award being handed out this year for Song of the Year. The Jonas Brothers' "When You Look Me in the Eyes" is in the running, along with Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl," Juanes' "Me Enamora," Tokio Hotel's "Monsoon" and Julieta Venegas' "El Presente." The JoBros were also nominated in the Best International Pop Artist category, with Amy Winehouse, Fergie, Madonna and Rihanna, while Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars, Coldplay, Panic at the Disco and Paramore are all in the running for Best International Rock Artist.

The Jonases may also walk away from the October 16 event with another award for Best New International Artist. Alizée, Katy Perry, Paramore and Tokio Hotel are also nominated in that category.

Tokio Hotel, Vier Nominierungen bei den „MTV Latin Awards“
Im Oktober fliegen Bill, Tom, Georg und Gustav nach Mexiko zu den „MTV Latin Awards“. Dort sind sie gleich in vier Kategorien nominiert: als „Newcomer des Jahres“, für den „Song des Jahres“ (für die englische Version von „Durch den Monsun“) und den „Klingelton des Jahres“. Außerdem könnte der Fan-Club der Gruppe einen Award abstauben.
Der Termin ist der 16. Oktober in Mexiko

Colombia's Juanes sweeps MTV Latin America awards

GUADALAJARA, Mexico (Reuters) - Colombian pop star Juanes was the big winner at the 2008 MTV Latin America awards on Thursday, scooping up four trophies to add to his ballooning collection as one of the region's best-selling artists.

A suave rocker known for foot-tapping hits like "A Dios le Pido" (I ask God) and "La Camisa Negra" (The Black Shirt), Juanes won "Artist of the Year," "Best Solo Artist," "Best Rock Artist" and "Best Artist - Central" at the event in the Mexican city of Guadalajara.

Fans screamed as the singer, dressed in his trademark black, collected his trophies -- lurid pink tongues with metal piercings, mounted on a base -- and paid tribute to veteran rock band Metallica, who played at the event.

"I am here thanks to Metallica," Juanes said, sporting a new short haircut.

"When I was 13 I listened to Metallica's first record and I went to buy an electric guitar. I decided to become a musician," said Juanes, who performed a track from his new album "La Vida es un Ratico" (Life is a Moment).

Other winners, picked by television viewers via the Internet and text messages, included Cafe Tacuba, one of Mexico's most popular bands, as "Best Alternative Artist," and Chile's Kudai as "Best Pop Artist" and "Best Group or Duet."

Juanes, whose nickname is a contraction of his name Juan Esteban, grew up in the violent Colombian city of Medellin.

He got his break eight years ago from a Los Angeles music producer and has become one of Latin America's biggest stars, selling 10 million records and picking up a string of Grammys.

His catchy tracks fuse rock with Latin folk music and range from love ballads to songs that rue the 40-year-old conflict between armed guerrilla groups and the Colombian government.

Mexican and Colombian artists have taken the most awards since the annual MTV Latin America contest was launched in 2002.

Guadalajara -- Mexico's second-biggest city and home to tequila, mariachi bands and rodeo-style horsemen -- was the most adventurous venue yet for the ceremony, which was held in Mexico City for the past two years and in Miami before that.

Bei den diesjährigen MTV-Latino-Awards hat die deutsche Teeny-Band Tokio Hotel den Preis für den Song des Jahres erhalten. Bill Kaulitz, der Leadsänger von Tokio Hotel, übernahm den MTV-Award für „Monsoon“ am Donnerstag-Abend.

Die deutsche Glam-Pop-Band Tokio Hotel hat bei den MTV-Latino-Awards den Preis für den Song des Jahres bekommen. Leadsänger Bill Kaulitz nahm die Ehrung für den Hit „Monsoon“ am Donnerstagabend in der mexikanischen Stadt Guadalajara entgegen.

Die meisten Preise bei den MTV Video Music Awards Latin America gewann allerdings der kolumbianische Sänger und Gitarrist Juanes. Der 36-Jährige überzeugte als bester Solokünstler, Künstler des Jahres, bester Rockmusiker und bester Künstler der Region. „Ich möchte diesen Preis meiner Familie, meinen Töchtern und ganz Lateinamerika widmen“, sagte Juanes, als er den Preis für den Rockmusiker des Jahres entgegennahm. Sein Album „La Vida ... Es Un Ratico“ ist auch für fünf Latin Grammys nominiert. In Kolumbien engagiert sich der Musiker auch für den Kampf gegen Landminen.

Juanes, gran triunfador en séptima entrega de los Premios MTV
Latinoamérica al ganar 4 'Lenguas'

El colombiano, que tenía 7 nominaciones, obtuvo los premios como
'Mejor solista', 'Mejor artista central', 'Mejor artista rock' y
'Artista del año', este último el más importante de la noche

En una ceremonia donde las irreverencias, las informalidades, y los
chistes subidos de tono fueron la nota dominante, Juanes se deshizo en
agradecimientos.

''Quiero dedicar este premio a mi familia, a mis hijas y a
Latinoamérica'', dijo el colombiano Juanes en una de sus intervenciones.
''Hace más de 20 años, cuando compré mi primera guitarra eléctrica fue
por la banda más grande del mundo: 'Metallica'. Por ellos estoy aquí
parado'', dijo más adelante en honor a la banda, cuyos integrantes tuvieron una magnífica actuación en vivo que hizo gritar y brincar de
alegría al público.

Juanes, quien estuvo acompañado de su esposa, estrenó además su tema
'Odio por amor', acompañado de varias chicas con banderas blancas en
señal de paz.
Los organizadores dijeron que el evento, que sería transmitido con dos
horas de retraso, llegaría a 21 millones de hogares en América Latina,
80 millones en Estados Unidos y más de 560 millones en los cinco
continentes.

Colombian singer JUANES has swept the board at the MTV Latin America Awards, taking home four trophies.
The rocker beat off stiff competition to take home the Artist of the Year, Best Solo Artist, Best Rock Artist and Best Artist - Central awards at the event in Guadalajara, Mexico on Thursday (16Oct08).
Juanes, who performed his new song Odio por Amor , dedicated one of his awards to Metallica, who also played at the event, saying, "I am here thanks to Metallica. When I was 13, I listened to Metallica's first record and I went to buy an electric guitar. I decided to become a musician."
